Indie games are on the rise and there’s no slowing down for the new year of 2020! I managed to narrow down my top ten most anticipated indie games (with some AAA title exceptions) while taking a look and what’s releasing soon for PC and consoles, which you can check out below! There are various genres for everyone including simulation games, action/adventures, puzzle games, multiplayer games, and more!

The Good Life

Take a on a job as a journalist in small British town called Rainy Woods, solve a murder, uncover a secret, transform into a dog or cat with unique abilities, and take as many photographs as you want!

The Good Life is a simulation RPG co-developed by SWERY and Yukio Futatsugi, along with their teams at White Owls and G-rounding. It will be releasing sometime this Spring 2020 on Steam, PS4, and Xbox One. Find out more on their Kickstarter page here.

Spiritfarer

Spiritfarer is a cozy life simulation and management game where you play as a ferrymaster, guiding the deceased into the afterlife. Don’t worry, it isn’t a horror game. In fact it’s quite the opposite, with a theme of “saying goodbye”. Spirits will be animals on your boat that you care for and forge relationships with. Build them a home, farm, mine, fish, harvest, cook, weave, craft, until they are ready to move on! A second player can also control play as Daffodil the cat, your companion, locally.

The game is created by indie studio Thunder Lotus Games, and will be releasing sometime in 2020 on Steam, PS4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch.

Gods and Monsters

From the creators of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Ubisoft, comes a storybook adventure set on an island full of mythical monsters. Save the Greek gods by taking on tricky challenges, dangerous dungeons and heroic trials.

This open-world action game looks absolutely gorgeous! Gods and Monsters will be releasing February 25th, 2020 on Epic Games Store, and all major consoles.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

This giant project by Square Enix, the one that everyone has been waiting for, has been pushed to April 10, 2020 for the PS4. However, it’s worth the wait because of the significant upgrade in graphics and quality. I only wish they didn’t change the ATB-gauge in favor of real-time action but I probably won’t be able to resist playing regardless.

Note that Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released in an episodic format and therefore the story for this date will cover the events leading up to Midgar only, with some added content.

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin side-scrolling action with deep crafting and farming simulation. Players take on the role of Sakuna, a proud yet lonely harvest goddess who is banished to a dangerous island with a group of outcast humans. The game is also “an ode to the artistry of cultivating rice”, with a story that incorporates Japanese history and legend.

The game is developed by Edelweiss and published by XSEED (Heroland), and will be releasing in 2020 on PC, PS4, and Switch.

Summer in Mara

Summer in Mara is a single-player summer adventure. Take care of your own island, farming the land and crafting new tools in order to survive. You can also sail away with your boat to new islands, meet unique characters and find hidden treasures. But the ocean wants you to fulfill your destiny and when it calls you, you’ll have to answer. It sounds like Moana and I love it.

Created by indie studio Chibig, this game will be releasing in 2020 on Steam here, and all major consoles. You can even help support them on Indiegogo here.

Röki

Röki is an adventure game inspired by Scandinavian folklore; a dark contemporary fairy tale underpinned by a touching narrative, alluring art style, ancient puzzles and atmospheric exploration. I played a limited demo of it on Steam and enjoyed finding items to help me in progressing the story!

The game is developed by Polygon Treehouse and published by United Label, and will be releasing on PC in 2020.

The Survivalists

The Survivalists is an adventure-filled survival sandbox set in The Escapists universe. It was announced during Nintendo’s last Indie World Showcase and features exploration, building, crafting, looting, and even training adorable monkeys to help with all of those tasks! You’ll also be able to have up to 4 friends join you in multiplayer campaign!

The game is developed and published by Team17 (Moving Out), and is releasing in on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and Steam.

Lost Words: Beyond the Page

Lost Words is a 2D narrative adventure game where players move words to solve puzzles. The game features a story written by Rhianna Pratchett and ties the narrative into the gameplay in an unusual way, by having the player running on and interacting with words to solve puzzles.

This emotional journey is developed by Sketchbook Games and Fourth State, and is published by Modus Games. Furthermore, it will be releasing sometime in 2020 on Steam and all major consoles.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

It has been 8 years (2012) since Nintendo released a main-series title of Animal Crossing with Animal Crossing: New Leaf on the 3DS. Now, it has been announced during a Nintendo Direct that Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be releasing on March 20th, 2020 for the Nintendo Switch.

The game will take place on a deserted island, thanks to a vacation package by Tom Nook, and will include a new in-game currency, new hairstyles and clothing, skin color choices, the ability to craft furniture, a multiplayer option, and more!
