New Pokemon Sword/Shield Expansion Pass Announced

On January 9th, 2020, Nintendo announced a few new things in the works regarding their Pokemon franchise during their first Nintendo Direct of the new year. A remake of 2006 Blue and Red Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, will be releasing on March 6th, 2020 for $79.99 US. It is available to pre-purchase here on the Nintendo Switch along with a free demo. Game Freak also gave us the release date for the new the new cloud-based service app Pokemon Home; February 2020. With this app, you’ll be able to transfer your Pokemon from Pokemon Go, Pokemon: Let’s Go Eevee/Pikachu, and Pokemon Bank to your copy of Pokemon Sword/Shield, as long as they already exist in that version.

What really caught my attention during this Nintendo Direct was the announcement of Pokemon Sword/Shield Expansion Pass. Rather than release entirely new games with some extra content like they did for Pokemon Sun/Moon (Ultra), these passes will cost $29.99 and can be added to your existing save file. The passes are releasing in two parts: Isle of Armor in June 2020 and The Crown of Tundra in Fall 2020. The Expansion Pass will include 2 new areas, over 100 new clothing items, new and old Pokemon, and more! Even if you don’t have the Expansion Pass, you’ll be able to get those new Pokemon from those that do via Link Trades.

About The Isle of Armor

In The Isle of Armor expansion, you’ll head to The Isle of Armor, the stage of your new adventure in the Galar region. The Isle of Armor is a giant island full of environments not seen in Galar before—you’ll find wave-swept beaches, forests, bogs, caves, and sand dunes! There are also plenty of Pokémon that make this island their home, living freely amid the lush natural surroundings. There’s even a dojo here that specializes in some very particular training styles! You and your Pokémon will take up an apprenticeship under the master of this dojo and train hard to become even stronger.

New Avatar Look

In The Isle of Armor, you’ll be ready to face any challenge thanks to your new training wear. It’s a special outfit that’s sure to get you ready in both body and mind for your upcoming training!

New Characters

Mustard will appear in The Isle of Armor and will be responsible for your training. He’s a legendary Trainer who held the seat of Champion for an astounding 18 years, back before Dynamaxing was incorporated into the battles of the Pokémon League. His record has yet to be beaten! In fact, Champion Leon himself trained under Mustard, and Mustard was the first one to recognize Leon’s latent talent!

There are two new rivals that can appear in The Isle of Armor. They’re skilled Trainers of Poison-type Pokémon and Psychic-type Pokémon, respectively, and they’re training hard so that they can someday set up a Gym and stadium for their own type!,You’ll face a different rival depending on which game you’re playing.

New Legendary Pokemon

On The Isle of Armor you’ll encounter new Fighting-type Pokemon Kubfu which will evolve into Urshifu and has the two following forms: Single Strike Style (Fighting/Dark) and Rapid Strike Style (Fighting/Water). Both forms have different Gigantamax forms as well!

Galarian Slowpoke can later evolve into Galarian Slowbro if you use an item that can be found on The Isle of Armor. It can also evolve into Galarian Slowking if you use an item that can be found in The Crown Tundra.

Starting today you will also have an increased chance of running into Gigantamax:

Finally, if you pre-purchase the Expansion Pass of your specific game version via the Nintendo eShop (in-game), you’ll be able to receive a Pikachu Uniform and an Eevee Uniform as a special purchase bonus.

I’ll definitely be diving back into my copy of Pokemon Shield for that new Galarian Slowpoke at the very least! Will you be purchasing the new Expansion Pass? Let me know in the comments below!
