Nintendo’s March 2020 Indie World Showcase Features Baldo, and More!

Today, March 17th, 2020, Nintendo published a 20 minute presentation, Indie World Showcase, announcing upcoming indie games for the Switch this year. Nothing new was announced aside from the fact that most of the games shown will be releasing exclusively on the Switch first, before any other platform. Furthermore, some of my most anticipated indie games that I have previously mentioned, but haven’t heard from in a while, have confirmed their releases of sometime this year and we got more gameplay footage!

These games include Summer of Mara, which will be one of the Switch timed-exclusives, where you’ll also receive exclusive in-game accessories such as a “I Love Mara” t-shirt and a turtle shell backpack! The Good Life is confirmed to be coming to the Switch in 2020 with the latest update being the ability to ride sheep as a mode of transportation! Finally, there’s Ghost of a Tale that caught my eye during the Steam Lunar New Year Sale, and Superliminal which was previously an Epic Games exclusive now coming to the Switch this summer.

What surprised me the most was getting more information about the amazing Studio Ghibli/Ni No Kuni look-alike, Baldo, and a few other indie games I wasn’t previously privy to. The following are the ones I’m most looking forward to: I Am Dead, Cyanide & Happiness – Freakpocalypse, The Last Campfire, and Wingspan. I’ll talk more on those games below, you can also watch the full Indie World Showcase of March 2020 for all other indie games.

Baldo: The Guardian Owls

Baldo is an action/adventure RPG, full of puzzles and intricate dungeons to solve. Travelling around the world, Baldo will interact with many weird and funny characters scattered everywhere, to complete the main story quest and many other side-quests. You’ll travel into an open world map discovering new towns and people, fighting enemies , locating hidden temples and collecting objects to get new weapons or items to use. The game is created by Naps Team, and will be releasing on the Switch Summer of 2020.

I Am Dead

I Am Dead is a charming puzzle adventure game from the creators of Hohokum and Wilmot’s Warehouse (Hollow Ponds) about exploring the afterlife. Morris Lupton is the recently-deceased museum curator of the tiny island of Shelmerston who is reunited with the ghost of his dog Sparky, only to discover that a disaster is about to destroy his beloved island. The game is published by Annapurna Interactive and reminds me of a mix of Donut County graphics and quirkiness with the spying of Telling Lies.

Cyanide & Happiness – Freakpocalypse

Looks like the hilarious Cyanide & Happiness webcomic is getting a game on the Switch this summer and I’m here for it! Developed by Explosm and published by Serenity Forge (Half Past Fate) comes an adventure about surviving high-school. As Coop “Go Away, Weirdo” McCarthy, all you want to do is make the world a better place. The trouble is: Nobody likes you, school sucks, you can’t find a prom date, everybody bullies you (including your teachers), and your attempts to help only makes things worse.

The Last Campfire

The Last Campfire is an adventure, a story of a lost ember trapped in a puzzling place, searching for meaning and a way home. You’ll be journeying across beautiful lands, meeting lost folk and strange creatures, and discovering mysterious ruins. A unique tale from Hello Games, the creative minds behind LostWinds, releasing on the Switch Summer of 2020.

In this relaxing strategy card game your goal as a bird enthusiast is to discover and attract the best birds. The game is based on the award winning, competitive, medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game, but with hundreds of unique, animated birds with their real life sound recordings. There’s even a multiplayer mode where you can play with up to 5 friends! Wingspan is created by Monster Couch and is releasing on the Switch Spring of 2020, which is great timing considering most of us will be indoors.

I’d like to hear from you in the comments section below about which indie games mentioned in the showcase you’re most excited to play on the Nintendo Switch this year!
