Ever since I played Yooka-Laylee by Playtonic Games, a 3D platformer I backed on Kickstarter, I’ve been nostalgic for such games that were rampant back in the day. My favorite game is Banjo-Kazooie, hence the profile picture, for its cheeky dialog, silly and lovable characters, worlds to explore full of fun mini-games and collectibles, etc. I haven’t played Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair yet, it’s in my PC library, but I much prefer a 3D world I can roam in, as apposed to a side-scroller which is very restrictive.
All that to say, I’ve been on the hunt for indie games that tick all of those boxes. To my delight, I was able to find some developers that felt the same way and that are working on capturing the magic of classic 3D platforming games. The following games are the ones I’m most excited to play upon their release!
Clive “N” Wrench
Clive ‘N’ Wrench is a 3D platformer centred around Clive, a rabbit, and Wrench, the literal monkey on his back. Their adventure will take you through time and space in a 1950’s fridge, all on a quest to to undo Clive’s cousin (Nancy’s) mistake, and ultimately thwart the tyrannical Dr Daucus! The game features 11 distinct levels as well as boss battles and a hub world.
Created by DinosaurBytes, Clive ‘N’ Wrench will be coming to Windows, Mac, and Linux. There isn’t a release date as of now, but you can try out a demo here! I personally love how the monkey companion is being used as a propeller, reminding me of all the rough times Kazooie had to go through.
Longtail is an upcoming 3D platforming adventure game from Hologram Monster. The game is made in the vein of PS2 era 3D platformer classics, with a focus on platforming, discovery and fun puzzles with modern twists.
There isn’t much more information about Longtail as of yet, but you an follow the developer’s progress on their Twitter page here. The music and graphics of this game is definitely bringing me back!
Mail Mole is a 3D platformer where you play as Molty, the mailmole, who has to deliver a package at the end of each level. In his way, Molty will encounter many hazards, challenges and secrets. Can you help Molty reach his goal on time?
The game is created by Talpa Games, a small indie game studio focused on creating great experiences for all the family. Mail Mole is still in early development so there’s still a long way to go before we get a release date. I just love the idea of diving in and out underground for some jumps and evasion tricks.
Raccoo Venture is a fun 3D platformer that brings the nostalgia from 1990s in a playful and puzzle-filled world. Defeat multiple enemies and challenges, find new outfits to customize the hero, discover new friends who will help you on this journey to recover the holy relics.
Raccoo Venture is created by sole developer Diego Ras, and is available now on Steam Early Access here. This game has a nice touch of collectible outfits, and the ability to control a pigeon for some puzzle-solving.
Billie Bust Up
Billie Bust Up is a musical 3D platformer with a large cast of cute characters! Play as a magical goat witch or as an adorable dopey fox, each with their own unique skillsets. You can also play alone or with your friends in local co-op mode.
For more information about the game, and a playable demo, you can join creator Katie Nelson on her Patreon here. I’ve seen some examples of how we’ll be able to pet, bathe, and take care of Oscar the fox, and I’m sold.
Explore, leap and shoot to save your family from the insect invasion! Leap with the agility of a tamarin as you journey into the Northern wilderness, in a world full of exploration, 3D-platforming and bug-splattering action!
Created by Chameleon Games, Tamarin will be releasing sometime in March 2020 on the PS4 and Steam. I’m pretty intrigued by this platforming, shooting, and adventuring combination.
