Top 5 Indie Games at PAX Online EGX Digital 2020

EGX Digital, part of a larger group of conventions with PAX Online, is one of the UK’s largest gaming shows. This year of course, everything will be online which includes livestreams with developers, playable demos, merch, and more! The event runs from September 12th, 2020 to September 20th, 2020 so we had a chance to check out the PAX Online Indie Showcase.

They looked at over 350 indie games available on Steam, and picked 20 titles that they thought were the best. Over the weekend, we played all available exclusive demos and chose our top 5 favorite indie games! See the list below for our highly recommended picks and our accompanying gameplay videos!

This RPG, isometric, cyberpunk narrative game is developed by Anshar Studios and is releasing on Steam, GOG, and the Nintendo Switch later this year (2020). You are a game detective, who solves crimes inside virtual worlds. Use your wits to gather info from your witnesses and suspects, getting to the bottom of deceptive schemes. The game continually adapts to your decisions and never judges.

The game is pretty suggestive of adult content but it does remind me of Total Recall meets Sword Art Online. That, coupled with my love of mystery games and narrative branches, puts this game on the top of my Wishlist. It even looks like you’ll get to make deductions in the cases like in the Sherlock games, but I ran out of time before being able to try it.

This cooperative action RPG is developed by DragonBear Studios and will be releasing on Steam and the Nintendo Switch “soon”. Discover magical potions, serve otherworldly guests, and pacify monsters. Gather your party and journey on a quest to overcome the evil Wizard – your landlord!

Innchanted is Overcooked with high fantasy, with a dash of Little Dragons Café, and I absolutely love it. Just seeing these adorable creatures and humans alike come in, makes it a pleasure to serve them. At the end of every in-game day, you can select some events that might give you an advantage or disadvantage next round. You’ll even get the chance to upgrade certain parts of your inn. Another cool feature is getting the unused AIs to help you out with tasks!

Polter Pals

This spooky puzzle game is developed by Split Hare Games and will be releasing on Steam this Fall 2020. Make ghost friends by steering the living into deadly hazards to release their souls. Puzzle through diorama-style levels and make as many friends as possible using comically fatal accidents. Keep up with the latest memes by getting popular on the afterlife’s hottest social media app, LiveBurial.

This app is actually quite hilarious to scroll through after every level with its many memes and conversations of the recently deceased. The idea of dealing a high death count is one I really enjoyed with Death Coming. Polter Pals, however, is more about placing the humans in strategic areas or facing them in certain directions before “lighting the match”.

This casual, relaxing indie game is developed by Witch Beam and will be releasing on Steam and Humble sometime in 2021. It’s about pulling possessions out of boxes and fitting them into a new home. Part “item Tetris”, part home decoration, you are invited to create a satisfying living space while learning clues about the life you’re unpacking.

It sounds very simple because it is, and that’s O.K. Wondering what I was going to find in my boxes next and where I was going to place those items was extremely satisfying. Then, when you’ve finished with a whole box, it disappears and you’re left with quite the sense of accomplishment. It’s decorating and organizing all at once! This game is perfect for those that may suffer from anxiety, or just after having a long and stressful day.

Button City

Button City is a colorful low poly adventure game about cute animals and an arcade. It’s created by Subliminal and will be releasing soon on Steam. Play as Fennel the fox as you explore a diorama world, play exciting arcade games, and meet cute animal friends. Explore a high-jinks story to save the arcade from a greedy fat cat who threatens to tear it down.

It technically wasn’t part of the Showcase but the demo is available through Steam for the first time and during the length of the digital con. I really loved to learn what I could from the unique characters in this game and I look forward to speaking with them again! I also got to try one of the mini-games and it brought me back to the 90’s, in a great way.
